Ever heard of a "dimmer switch "?

I live with my best friend in a house he bought recently. It's got a fabulous kitchen but horrible lighting. Being the resident chef, and also seeing as the home-owner is, shall we say both motivationally and decoratively challenged, I bought this as a part of his Christmas gifts (though it really will be more a gift for me than him). Specifically, I wanted something like this, similar to what I had in my own kitchens of the past, because there's nothing better than having warm, bright and directional lighting for a kitchen. I set these up to be aimed at the key areas of the countertops and sink so that I have great lighting where I'm doing my work and that simultanously gives a really great looking, sleek feel to the kitchen itself and the granite countertops. To the reviewers who were crying about it being too bright.have you never heard of a dimmer switch? I purchased one with the light fixture because, well, because I think things through actually and using my head I know that I don't want ultra-bright spotlights blaring at every surface all the time. A dimmer switch, which is so easily installed I think my cat could handle the procedure, gives a fixture like this the ability to serve as great task lighting AND as sexy ambient lighting and all things in between. I cannot even imagine purchasing lighting like this without attaching a dimmer switch. And yes, to the cheap contruction complaints, it is built for it's pricepoint. It's why some of these fixtures at Home Depot cost $500 and this one costs $30. You kind of have to expect that when spending $30 you're not likely to get the $500 quality. Be brave, I know that must be really shocking to some, but I think you'll find life is something like that on a regular basis. There's a saying you may not know.you get what you pay for. Guess what? It's accurate. But frankly, I don't understand why anyone would be that concerned. Unless you're planning to install this fixture on your own back and walk around offering mobile spot lighting services to passersby on the sidewalk I'm fairly certain the CEILING FIXTURE, that won't likely be moved nor even touched except to change bulbs about every FIVE YEARS since they're LED bulbs, is likely to hold up for 20 years or more if necessary. And for $30, I think you're doing okay on the deal, no? People want everything for nothing. I live on Earth and only expect to get what I pay for and even then this, to me, is better than I would hope for at such a low pricepoint. And if it suddenly dissolves one day due to a speck of dust hitting it as you fear, well, it's $30, I think you'll be able to pick up the pieces of your shattered existence and move on. As some say, cheer up, it may not happen. The fixture looks great, works, and with a dimmer it's darn near perfect. That doesn't leave much to complain about does it? Oh yeah, and it's RETURNABLE if you don't like it. Wow, how about that? Seriously, I'm picky about stuff really, but it's a nice fixture and until I have the resources to live like a movie star, this will do just fine. And my roomie loves it, by the way thus life is good. One quick addendum: I found the included Daylight White LED bulbs to be horrible, as in offensive to human, plant, animal or deity. They were akin to a supernova of florescent lighting which, if you're still drawing breath, you know nothing looks good under florescent lighting. Additionally if using a dimmer switch with the fixture, you must buy an LED compatible dimmer or you'll get flickers from the bulbs and the dimmer won't really dim either, or very little. LED compatible dimmers are usually about triple the price of a standard dimmer switch. I solved the problem the old-school way. I ordered standard GU-10 Halogen bulbs and swapped out the LEDs. There's nothing about the fixture that prevents this, it's perfect safe, and it's the exact same size bulb, just not LEDs inside. Now I have warm yet bright light, the directionally pointed bulbs are far more focused, meaning the light does spread out and diffuse as badly as the LEDs, thus when you point a bulb at say a painting, the light focuses on the painting in a noticable fashion, think more like 4 spotlights than one enormously hideous floodlight. And, with the LEDs gone and the nice lights in, the standard dimmer switch works perfectly, and cost $8 vs. $30 for the other. Probably there are "warm white" options for the LED bulbs too, but in this case I think LEDs just aren't well suited to this kind of light fixure and how it's generally used so I'd very much recommend getting the halogen bulbs, it's a difference between night and, well, staring at the most hideously offensive pseudo-daylight ever conceived. So, just a minor improvement ;-)
