The first thing that struck me when I opened this thermometer is that the blister pack it comes in is refillable! It provides the perfect storage box and protects it from dust and dirt. Well! The second thing I noticed was that the instruction manual was printed in a font large enough to be read! I wish more manufacturers would do this. The instructions are clear and using the thermometer is easy enough if you read the instructions quickly. To test the accuracy I decided to measure the temperature of the ice water and then the temperature of the boiling water. For ice water, I used a thin opaque plastic cup. Then I filled it with ice and added water. After being gone for a few minutes, I checked the temperature. Measured temperature 32.1 degrees Fahrenheit. Brilliant! The boiling water test was not that easy. I boiled water in a microwaveable coffee mug. I let it simmer for a few minutes, trying to get the mug up to the same temperature as the boiling water. Then I opened the microwave and immediately checked the temperature of the mug outside. He measured 200.1 degrees Fahrenheit. Attempting to measure the temperature of the water directly gave mixed results (as expected) as the water is clear and evaporates (instructions state that steam reduces accuracy). The temperature for boiling water should be 212 degrees Fahrenheit. However, I cannot say with certainty that the device was shut down because of the product or because of the testing method. I have chosen not to deduct points for this test as I cannot definitively say that the product failed this test. The last test I did was to take my wife's temperature by scanning her forehead. The clinical thermometer showed a temperature of 97.5; This device showed her temperature as 95.3. It's too big a difference for me, so we don't plan to use it as a forehead scan thermometer. Overall I would give this product four stars. It is very easy to use and was proven to be accurate in at least one of my tests. The instructions and the device contain warnings not to aim the laser at a person's eyes. This is a critical point if you want to use it as a forehead thermometer. When using as a forehead thermometer, I strongly recommend turning off the laser. I will recommend this to a friend.
