I bought these instead of the Audioengine a2+ and I'm glad I did. I'm by no means an audiophile, but I know what I like, clear, crisp, tight sound. I don't like speakers that exaggerate frequencies to hide their flaws at other frequencies. These speakers have some mid-range boost, but not excessively, and are mostly linear. I ordered Audioengine corner stands (think they look better) and paired them with a Sub 8 (it was $20 cheaper than the Sub 6 at the time of purchase) and together they sound fantastic. If you don't have room for a subwoofer you won't be disappointed, they deliver punchy, tight bass without distortion. The onboard DAC is good and better than most mid-range motherboards or anything else you'll find in a laptop.
