The BikeE AT Recumbent (and NX, FX, RX, E2) uses a Cane Creek air shock in the rear. Since these bikes are around 20 years old, the shock absorbers can be in poor condition. Cane Creek can be restored, but the kit is about $25 and the shock body may be worn enough to allow air to pass through. I found this DNM damper and thought it was worth a try for the price. They come in a variety of lengths, and the shorter length closest to the length of the Cane Creek shock was out of stock. So I order the next size up. I was very impressed with the build quality of the shock. My concerns were that the damping and spring rate (750 pounds) would not be enough for my tall/heavy frame. Also, the extra length of the shock would create a clearance or chainline issue. To install the shock on top I had to add 2 washers on each side of the shock as spacers. Aside from holding the washers in place while tightening the bolts, it was easy. For the bottom part, the gasket had to be filed on each side to fit the bottom bracket. After installation I was very happy that the damper works great! The extra height is about 3/4" more at the seat. There is no problem with the chain. The damping and springing are near perfection. I reduced the preload by a few turns for a bit more softness. All, for me, it's a big improvement I don't need to keep a shock air pump on hand or check your shock air before riding.
