The device itself worked well even after I put the metal plate IN my thin plastic case. It would certainly have been even better grip if the plate was on the outside. However, the tape could not withstand the hot summer heat. I opened the truck door to find the mount had fallen off in the parking lot and was resting in the cup holder. Luckily my phone wasn't connected to it at the time. Incidentally, the tape was still stuck to the dash and removing it stripped the paint off the plastic panel a bit, revealing the black plastic underneath. The problem wasn't how I prepared the surface, but how well the tape stuck to the mount. My truck is old and has a lot of different life scars so it doesn't matter but if it were newer and nicer I might feel different.
