If you need to transfer corners from a wall or workpiece to a miter saw to replicate in some sort of molding or similar this is perfect. If you want to calculate an angle and get readings to do something else with that number (seems like a lot of people thought that was the case), you don't need it. The locking mechanism works well when used as it should, you really don't need a lot of lock. After the measurement, you should not press on any of the wings. Lock it and take it to the saw, bang it on the guard and move the blade so it touches the yellow blade stop, take it off, make the cut and be amazed at how easy it was. That's it, nothing fancy, not meant to give you an angle in degrees or to lock and hold your weight while bouncing it up and down.
