Surprisingly simple and useful

I don't write many reviews, but since many potential buyers are as skeptical as I am, I thought it was important to point out this fun fact: IT WORKS GREAT! It's not like you think everything is fine based on the product description, or cover up sales points on the packaging. Be bold, however, as the instructions inside are clear and opening the plastic clamshell is perhaps the hardest part of the endeavor. It only took me a few minutes to reproduce the basic buttons needed to control an Epson, Sony projector. Soundbar, LG plasma TV, Cambridge Audio integrated amplifier and Marantz home theater amplifier. You put this universal remote into programming mode, press a button on each remote, and after about two seconds, two buttons do the same thing. Then move on to a new pair of buttons and repeat; The universal remote control remains in programming mode. So if you know what you want to do, you can easily set up a few key pairs per minute. I had an idea that turned out to be useful if you have access to a photocopier. . . Place the remote control on the glass and make a paper copy of the button layout. Then use a pencil and (possibly) an eraser to tweak the result. This may not be necessary if you are just making a clone of the current remote, but in my case, when I used this to reduce the need for FIVE different remotes, I had to do some thinking to figure out the optimal button configuration. a few things to consider. Unsurprisingly, nothing happens when the original remote is RF (Radio Frequency) and not IR (Infrared). And attempts to copy my Tivo remote (set in IR mode) didn't work and I don't know why. Finally, my Cambridge Audio amplifier required a separate "on" button and another "off" button, even though that was the only button on the original remote. So if you find that you can turn on a device after moving the power button, but can't turn it off with the same button, you probably need to assign a separate power button to each state. But overall it's fantastic. Over the years I have used very high quality/expensive programmable remotes from Yamaha, Harmony, Philips and others and I have used Harmony at almost every price point. And I've also used a dozen universal remotes with Enter Code. All have their merits, but in a situation where you want to quickly copy a few important keys from each of multiple remotes, nothing is easier to set up and use than this thing. If this sounds like your situation, risk buying it. I doubted it, but neither cheapness nor weird looks prevented it from being exactly what I needed for the simplest day-to-day control of a fairly complex system.

Pros
  • Stylish and modern design
Cons
  • Annoying
