Big gaps/holes to fill?

Let me start by saying that my assessment is from someone who has never worked with any type of mortar. For its application I give it 4 out of 5 points. I bought it after doing some thorough research looking for a product that would seal the gaps between my fireplace face and the firebox; There was a risk that the smoldering coals could be drawn into the fireplace frame and catch fire in the chimney. Drywall is also visible. I had a hole in the bottom strip (about 0.125" - 0.25" x 30") and 2 vertical side gaps along the height of the firebox, about 1.25" x 2" x 24". Applying grout to the surface of the floor makes it much easier to work with, but trying to patch/fill a gap on a vertical surface makes it more difficult. Be sure to add water little by little and do the ball test as directed on the outside of the box. The solution can easily be made too wet. *** If you apply a vertical coat with thicker coats: make sure it has a good and dense consistency. If the solution starts to spill, it's too wet. There's definitely a spot where it's easiest to use this grout on vertical surfaces. I suggest using staples, wood, or heavy duty tape to secure the vertical gaps you plan to fill. The paint dries to a very light grey. I also recommend gloves, a face mask, goggles, gloves, and a rag, especially if you're working indoors. Photos: 1. Still wet after filling the bottom gap. 2 and 3. The dried up vertical sides and bottom are slightly visible. You can see how much cleaner the work was on the bottom compared to the vertical sides. If I had to do it again I would wait until I realized that some of my grout mix is too thin to apply and I would have some sort of spacer to hold it in place. But if you find the "golden mean" then you don't need braces.
