Works exactly like my original pen - you press a button to stop the water flow. The pressure increases/decreases as the dial is turned up/down, so it seems to work the same as the original. It was very easy to install with almost no problems. One thing to watch out for is installing a new gasket. It slipped out of my fingers as I put it down and fell into a hole in the car. No shaking pulled it out so I had to remove the screws from the base of the unit and take it apart. It won't separate completely - which is good as I'm not sure it will easily rejoin. But it was enough that I could now shake it out of the car. I used tweezers to place it. Works perfectly.
