Of all the colored pencils I've ever used, the Prismacolor pencils come closest to true black. They are also very smooth. The only complaint I have is that they don't hold super sharp ends very well and tend to chip or snap the ends themselves, probably because they are so soft. I have to sharpen them more and more often to fill in the details, which can be a problem with my pencil sharpener in the first place as my other Prismacolors soft cores often have the same problem. Don't let that stop you from buying them as they are 100% value for money. Just make sure you use a gentle hand with them. They are probably better left to professional and passionate amateur artists than to children.
