An Essential Product You Can't Trust

I live in California where unfortunately the summer air quality has deteriorated significantly in the last 3 years due to wildfires. Understanding current air quality is important to managing my family's health. I bought an industrial air purifier that has an AQI reading on the dashboard, but unfortunately when it works the AQI is always below 10 because the sensor is next to the freshly cleaned air. I needed a way to measure the AQI within 30 feet of it, as well as in other rooms that are not near the air purifier. This product seemed perfect for my needs. But can you trust him? I chose 3 pieces and arranged them side by side. One would expect all 3 to measure roughly the same AQI, right? I am attaching photos of the results. For reference, according to Purpleair.com, today's outdoor air quality is somewhere between 110 and 120. I have half a dozen purple air sensors near me, all in that range, so that's a solid baseline. The first photo shows all 3 sets. In my bedroom. I'm not sure what to believe, but I tend to believe that 63 is wrong. It is frightening that the measuring range is so large. The second photo shows all 3 devices installed on my front door. Photo 63, taken indoors, seems to be the most accurate (112), but the others seem pretty close. The air purifier reads 4, but 63 stays at 56. Almost certainly far. In the fourth photo, all 3 are mounted on the air cleaner. The 4th block matches the air cleaner sensor, but the 12th block seems pretty close too. After moving the blocks around in each of the four photos, I let them sit for a few minutes before taking the photos. I only took photos after they decided on their number. Conclusions: 1) There is a big discrepancy between the units, although they are exactly the same product. This is unacceptable. There is a big difference between my bedroom 8 and 63. I tend to believe the number 8 a lot more than 63. But when you put the same units outside, 63 becomes the more plausible of the two. 2) Blocks are measured successfully when moving from good air to bad air. So they are not completely useless. The entire purpose of the product is to accurately measure air quality and if the accuracy cannot be trusted then it is a 1 star product. Upgrading it to 2 stars seems reasonable as the device will track when air quality is generally declining. My wife accidentally dropped the box in one of the 3 so I plan on returning the top 2 and keeping the bottom one. The bottom was accurate when placed on the air purifier, could have been accurate in my bedroom, and just below the advertised AQI of 20 when placed outside.

Pros
