I think the filter works well and is much cheaper to buy and install. But let me be very clear: THIS IS NOT EASY TO INSTALL. I would only recommend this if you have machinery experience and are willing to work in a very uncomfortable position under the dash. You can find helpful tutorial videos on YouTube. I had to buy a set of metric sockets (wrenches don't work) for one of the nuts. For me it's worth it. In comparison, changing the engine air filter (BMW 328i 2014) went smoothly, at least I don't recall it being difficult.
