Potentially Dangerous Stitches and Buckles

These collars use a long top seam to hold two layers of material together that could easily snag or cut by the wearer or another cat, resulting in a loose thread that could become lodged within could catch the wearer's neck. mouth or other object. There is no plastic loop for clamping down overlapping fabric near the notched half of the buckle, so if the buckle catches on the collar it can simply slip and tighten or loosen the collar's fit rather than breaking. Asphyxiation can occur under the right circumstances, which I experienced tonight. I bought this set of collars for my five cats (mother and four 6 month old kittens) as it cost the same as an almost identical collar. from a pet store and I wasn't sure my cats would tolerate wearing them. I put the collars on yesterday morning and after a few minutes of distraction with treats and toys, they all quickly forgot they had anything around their necks. However, this morning I noticed that the top edge of one cat's collar was beginning to fray and the reflective strip was beginning to peel off. I understood that during the day he would try to scratch his neck, but most of the time he would end up banging his claws on his collar. I was disappointed that the collar didn't look as pretty on him anymore, but it was only a surface issue so I left it at him. However, tonight I saw the same cat running across the room, which caught my attention. He seemed to be chasing something and when I went over to see what it was he brought both paws to his mouth as if trying to eat something and started making strange noises. On a whim I checked his collar to make sure it was still in place and to my surprise it was so tight I couldn't even lift it off his neck a bit it was starting to bite into him. I immediately went to untie him when I found that a loop of thread had wrapped itself around one of his teeth and as he started to turn his head and squirm because of it, she pulled the collar from the outside and pulled him. through the pointy end of the buckle, which then forced her to pull herself on so tightly that she legitimately choked him as he struggled and turned his head. After cutting the thread I was able to thread the fabric back through the buckle where it originally was. If I hadn't happened to be in the room when this happened and looked up why my cat ran away, I might not have realized what happened until it was too late. It's more likely an accident, but I swapped this cat out for a PetSmart brand collar that has no stitching at all, and I'll be switching my other cats to other collars as soon as possible. It's not worth risking just to save myself some money.
