Shorts are made from a lightweight, stretchy material, with the black areas having even more stretch. The back of the waistband is elasticated, so the waistband largely eliminates the need for side Velcro closures, making the shorts more secure at the waist. There are regular jean pockets that I don't use, so I'd say they're pretty much useless. There are also two lower pockets on the sides, vertical and horizontal. I wish the horizontal zip pocket was a bit longer so I could slip my phone in, but it's deep enough to carry around a few energy gels. The pocket with the longer vertical zipper is big enough for the phone but too big for the phone to rotate in, making it cumbersome. I've only ridden them once so far, but they seem pretty solid. I'm 5'9" and about 196 pounds. I ordered the extra large and they fit perfectly.
