This rev counter was completely inaccurate, the revs recorded were too high. The instructions say to wrap the wire around the spark plug wire 6-10 times, less if the RPM is too high and more if the RPM is too low. Well that defeats the purpose, how do I know if the RPM is too high or too low?! Isn't that the purpose of this tool?

This unit costs about half the equivalent so I wasn't expecting much. But I put in a spare battery, wrapped it around the spark plug wire of an outboard motor (oldie 7.5hp 2-stroke 2-cylinder) and started taking RPM measurements. That's exactly what I wanted. Appears to be well built but time will tell if it can handle the vibration and wet conditions that come with running an outboard motor. So far I'm a happy hiker, or rather a boatswain. Fairly easy to install. It seems to work reliably. There were two minor installation issues: 1. There is an o-ring on the battery cover that pulled out and shifted when I opened the battery compartment. I've tried to straighten and properly seat the o-ring and it seems to fit snugly, but I'm not relying on it being waterproof. According to the manual, it's "splashproof" and not waterproof anyway. I set the mower to 3500 rpm and could tell it was running low and initially 2700 rpm with 5 revs around the plug cord and also 2700 with 6 revs, unstable at 3-4 revs. So I say 5-6 turns is correct as recommended in the instructions. I'm an SR Calibration Specialist. So maybe I'll test it with a calibrated digital speedometer, more on that later. It was cheap but seems to work. RPMs shown match my portable digital speedometer. However, I doubt that in the instructions. It is intended to vary the number of turns around the spark plug wire to get the correct RPM. First, if you don't have any other means of measuring RPM, how the heck do you know about it? I have three of these cool devices. The mower will have a Honda engine, a Troy-Bilt TB30 rear engine and one of my alternators. I have to buy another one. They are great as they have replaceable batteries. And they show revolutions per minute. If possible, avoid getting it wet. It's waterproof, but not as waterproof as sealed devices.
