To work properly, install the batteries in series (one right side up and one right side down), ie you get a positive battery post and a negative battery post. Then place the battery box on the device and try to push the button, if that doesn't work, remove the battery box and rotate it 180 degrees, thus reversing the polarity on the device (this is a DC device, the Polarity is important, unlike AC units). Then the problem should be solved and everything will work fine. I agree that better labeling or instructions would be helpful, but this is a fairly simple circuit and only 2 variables, easily fixed in less than 30 seconds. As for the button on the bottom, I suspect this is to keep water out. A one-piece molded "dome" makes water ingress impossible. Detecting a side intrusion will negate this. Not bad overall, about $3 each once you figure it out.
