Measurements start at the end of the tape, not the ring/hook. This means that you have to offset what you are attaching the ring to by 1 inch, the diameter of the ring. The description is ambiguous so don't believe it. That being said, and this can be quite annoying if you're into spot photography like me, this tape is pretty well done. One more thing: once you fully wind the tape, it snaps into the locked position. You have to pull it with quite a bit of force to advance the tape again. When you do that over and over again in the field, it's kind of a pain.
