Review on πŸ“» Sangean HDR-14: The Ultimate Portable HD Radio/FM Stereo/AM in Standart Black by James Beird

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Good FM, reasonable AM.

I had two Sangean HDR-14 handsets. In the first one I used the wrong adapter and blew up the board. So be careful when connecting the radio. My second HDR-14 improved performance in both FM and AM. Pros: Sensitive FM. This radio picks up HD signals better than my HDR-16. While it's not as selective as the 16 on the VHF band, its standard sensitivity is quite good on the VHF and VHF HD bands. Even weak FM stations can be heard well with this radio. The end stations in mono still sound clear. The small size and lock switch make this radio convenient to take with you on the go. Battery life has been good so far. A lot of radio interference hides weak signals that can be heard on other radios. From my location, good AM radio stations pick up WLW AM 700 during the day. HDR-14 can't do that, and I assume it's because of the noise the radio makes. The FM selectivity could be a bit better. With the local station on 101.5 I can't hear the weak station on 101.3. HDR-16 can capture a weak signal. Conclusion: price, size, very good performance on FM and FM HD and adequate AM reception make this a good buy in my opinion. If AM were less loud I would easily give this radio 5 stars. Update from 07.06. I have traveled with this portable device. Its FM is quite sensitive. On standard VHF it was more sensitive than my C Crane Skywave radio. In a strong signal market you may hear a weaker picture from a strong FM station up to 0.4MHz higher than the signal level. While in St.Louis there was a weak signal of 93.7 around 94.1 from my location. This radio is quite sensitive, so this shortcoming does not detract from my rating. Very happy so far, especially on FM.
