Review on πŸ“» Uniden PRO501HH: Portable Handheld CB Radio with Large LCD Display, High/Low Power Saver, Auto Noise Limiter, NOAA Weather, and Earphone Jack by James Pope

Revainrating 4 out of 5

I haven't had that for a long time!

Upgrade 4: up to 4 stars. After setting this radio where it should be. SITREP - I contacted Uniden to find out why it's not putting out the full 4 watts. and nothing! I didn't get anything back. You probably don't need to open it up and change the power supply; like this! Without touching the subject of another device BUT - this actually works SIMPLY well - once you open it up and set it up. I was disappointed to read that the wattage was originally 2 watts. but tight! Please note that you will need an SWR/power meter to troubleshoot this. Also take one of the HYS 15in. Antennas too - the reception is much better than with normal ones. If you're just using a standard antenna, expect very, very little. You must take either HYS flexible or HYS 15 inch. - I would take 10 inches. one if you want real flexibility. HYS 15 inch. flexible but not that much. I usually have 10 inches. One on it just for ease of use and flexibility - I'll start things off. HYS makes both of the antennas I'm talking about. There are two lengths and models - you'll see when you search. Everything is available on Revain. Good radio, good performance (now), good range/reception - get it! Although as it is it will only be 2W. 1W=1 mile for reference. Update 3: Well, I guess I'll leave it at that. I just got some TX reports from some drivers; very clean, quite noisy - nothing extra - just enough. I also used a Bingfu-type flexible whip during this TX test. I think I'll ignore the higher SWR on a portable device and the fact that the peak isn't 4 watts. After also setting up the squelch I was able to do a TX test at my shop. The house is brick, and despite the electric noise, the trees, and maybe 200 yards off the interstate, I like what I'm getting now. I used to not be sure if I would be heard at all. I would connect my other mobile device on the counter (full 4w radio, REAL 4w radio), send a "radio check" and get a report almost immediately. Before I made the settings, the only thing I didn't get was via the PDA. Now I'm pretty sure I can go almost as far as my CB-27. And you really need to install an external antenna when using this in a car. The RF signal travels through the inside of your car unless the antenna is outside on the roof or at least through a window. Remember the ground plane - this works in reverse. So far I haven't tested in a car, I was either in my shop or leaning out of a door to place the antenna outside. I have included a shot of the radio where you can adjust the trims. If you decide to do what I did (I'm a licensed electronics technician), get an SWR/Watt meter BEFORE attempting anything. Please note that I am not responsible if you damage your own radio! As if it needs to be said; If you don't know what you're doing, take it to a shop that does. You can really ruin everything if you don't know what you're doing! After the power and noise canceling mods, this really is a different radio. Not at all the full 4w output as advertised, hence one star for taking the thing apart to get close to advertised power. That sucks, dude. Make it 4W from the factory! But yes, the final verdict - I leave it. You might even get another pair and customize that too. will be cheaper than getting a Cobra; what I'm still considering. It really makes me think of the mobile device I had from Uniden in the past. I bet it wasn't a full 4W lol. For portability and flexibility, be sure to get Bingfu or TWRDIO 10in. Whip antennas when you need something more durable than the standard hard plastic antenna. You can get two antennas for next to nothing and I would recommend the Anteenna BNC magnetic mount. This one actually comes with a rubber coating to protect your car's finish. The Bingfu shop holder has a paper bottom and sharp edges that dominate the color. But in any case, flexible whips are better in terms of performance and reception. The bingfu whip was where I get about 3 watts a little more, the standard antenna shows 3 watts. That, too, is a lie from Uniden - it even says "flexible antenna" on the packaging. I could just get cobra to mate and learn from it. Although the Cobra *may* not be strong enough. sigh. Why can manufacturers no longer be held liable for their mistakes? I have contacted Uniden support to see if I can get an answer from them regarding this issue. I will come back to this problem. As for others who have this radio, 1 watt = 1 mile. So the general rule of thumb is if you travel about 2 miles. and nothing after that, I bet your radio is 2 watts too. Others say they can't use them at 200 feet. separately somewhat contrived. maybe the squelch was turned too far; the only thing that came to my mind. Or they don't have antennas on the radio just frying it lol. I'll guess and say my transmission test was about 3-5 miles. Offer. Which I'm fine with - it won't be able to talk to people on the street, but if you're within a mile to 4 miles it should be fine. If that's not enough for you and you just MUST have more power and everything - get a GMRS license and grab some radios. In my honest opinion it's not at all reliable enough for "emergencies" - I wouldn't even consider trying to call CB for help instead of using my phone; What if you don't know 911 services connect everywhere even if you don't have service unless you really are in a radio frequency dead zone and I mean you are completely cut off from radio frequencies. If you don't believe that, grab a very old flip phone and dial 911 ;) It's up to you if you really think so! But I can absolutely guarantee you 110% times 11 that it works and will work every time. BUT on top of that - I got this because I wanted to rekindle some past hobbies that had slipped away from me over the years. I am a total fan of this and other radios and have lots of them and will be collecting many more! However, the CB is one of my favorite types of radio - it's just awesome. And no license or what you have. and a passport! Have fun!
