Review on ๐Ÿ›๏ธ Optimized Military Modular Sleep System 4 Piece incl. Goretex Bivy Cover & Carry Sack by Michael Jameson

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Great sleep system but not safe at -50F!

That's a good sleeping bag! Of course, it's not that compact, but it retains heat. I would question the -50ยฐF rating. I was just north of Two Harbors, Minnesota (on Lake Superior) and it was about -20F when we packed up and left. I'm a slightly heavier guy who doesn't have a cold at all. In this bag I was in a tent with another person. There was minimal wind/wind. I used all the layers of the sleeping bag, in fact I had an extra fleece lining for the sleeping bag which is said to reduce the system rating by 12ยฐF, long sleeves, t-shirt, hoodie over head, gloves and fleece balaclava mask over the mouth drawn. and nose. That is very important to me! All layers were dry. Sometime around 2-3 am I got quite cold. In hindsight, I had to use a floor pad to create a layer between me and the floor. According to the given rating, that should have brought me 30ยฐ lower. I think I would freeze in this bag if it was -50F! Personally, I believe the limit of this bag shouldn't be below -20ยฐF, which is what I've experienced. I have no idea if what I'm wearing matches the ECWCS clothing system used by the military, that's how the rating is given, but I believe it's sold on Revain to regular civilians like me. So the main reason for my review is to warn anyone who wants to use it in extreme temperatures. Gather yourself and use the floor pillow! Still, I don't regret buying this bag. That's the nicest thing I have.
