8 silver buttons are not all buttons. Only 4 buttons. The lower left button can be pressed 6 times to enter time setting mode. In time setting mode, you can press the lower right button to view each category (month, day, time, year). It beeps every time you press the button, which is annoying when setting the time, but you probably don't set the time often. The group does not lie flat. It is shaped like your wrist. I haven't messed with alarms or stopwatches, but to get to these modes press the bottom left button once for a timer, twice for a stopwatch and then the next 3 presses for 3 alarms. It's pretty easy and instructions are included. The white case looks like a jewelry box, making it a good gift for a child. My son has played around with it a lot (lots of beeps when the light is used with the top left button). If it breaks, go back and update it. He'll take a shower with it tomorrow, we'll see how it goes.
