My wife and I have been using the Philips HD4651 for a number of years and by comparison this kettle just doesn't stand up to scrutiny. The first problem is that there is no insulating layer and the outside of the pot gets HOT. This is a problem for anyone who gets burned in the kitchen (sorry honey). Second, there's no audible indicator to warn you when the water is boiling, so you know, the whole "observable pot" thing. Finally that. is. slow. I have a cooking competition side by side with Philips (still works but dies. I don't want to talk about it.), same amount of water (1.7 liters) and (a few years old) the old HD4651 beat the newbie by 2 minutes 15 seconds (8'30" vs 10'45"). That's over 25% longer! So in summary this kettle is not suitable for our home as we are impatient, as well as audible notifications and generally not prone to third degree burns. However, in a more comfortable home, this $[.] (plus shipping) model might work quite well.
