Revainrating 5 out of 5

Bright - questionable quality - generally reasonable for the price

I ride a little more on the road than the average cyclist and need above average light. I want something that can illuminate Michigan's bumpy roads at night far enough to be dodged at 20-25 mph. With this level of brightness, it has to endure for a long time, because in winter it gets dark here by 5 p.m. After about 500 miles and a few issues - this light does the trick. It has three levels of brightness and two flash modes. It combines a spot/projector beam so you don't have peripheral vision issues on a road bike. My longest full battery test lasted an hour on low mode and two hours on high mode, and it performed great even in cold temperatures. I've actually had a couple of cars blink their high beams at me to turn the lights off, which causes a problem. You can press the button to exit high mode, but then it goes into the first flash mode, which I assume is worse for the driver. Or you can press and hold the button to turn it off or close it with your hand but then YOU can't see anything at all, which I find worse. A better design would have the brightest mode first, allowing you to turn it off with a push of a button, then switch between modes after the car has passed to return to the brightest mode. Now for some other problems I had. When opening the well-packaged device, I was surprised at how many extras the flashlight comes with. Check out all these accessories! Overkill IMO and I wish they would put their money into developing a better base product. For example, I don't need a headband, GoPro handlebar mount, tensioning tool or any other rear light. I would pay them extra if I wanted to. So how can a product be better? I started using the included GoPro mount, but when I tightened the screw, the mount broke. I didn't try hard, I'm a mechanic and mechanical engineer by trade and I know how to tighten nuts. The bracket is made of fiberglass reinforced plastic and is very thin on one side. It came loose and broke easily. Luckily my other flashers mount under the bike computer via a GoPro mount, which is pretty common these days, and I was able to use them BUT it hangs the flashlight upside down. Not desirable for several reasons. First, you can't see the battery gauge, so there's no visual status on a long drive. You may be limited as to how far you can tilt the light as it is large and touching the frame or poles. I don't think the "waterproofing" was designed for an inverted position. It started raining on one ride and the lights were fine. But the next time I used it, I could only access low beam - no other modes. I emailed BrightEyes using the address provided on their website and was blown away by the speed and courtesy of customer service. Response within 1 hour (non-business hours EST) and a replacement head unit will be shipped the same day. I had no problems with the new head unit but now I install it on top of the bars which creates its own problem. Because the long GoPro mount broke, I had to use a short mount with rubber bands. I have flat stems so they need to be placed close to the stem where they are rounded. It's so bright that the beam reflects off the bike computer and it looks like someone is shining a small light in your eyes. Return to the Upside Down Mountain and hope it doesn't rain. Eventually the battery in the back box came loose. I mounted it on the top tube with a small towel wrapped around the frame to prevent scratches. If you shake the battery case you'll hear it dangling and rattling, so I'm not sure if it's putting stress on the wires - in which case it might not last long. So why 5 stars overall? I think I got what I paid for. $90 isn't really much for a light this bright that lasts so long AND the customer service should get 6 stars out of 5.
