I thought my laptop only had 2 USB ports. Two large Type-A ports. And since I'm using one of those ports for my Ethernet connection, I'm always missing a port. Then one day I noticed that I have a third USB port that uses a smaller Type-C connector, so I bought a USB Type-C to Gigabit network adapter. It connects securely to a port on my PC and has a network activity indicator on the ethernet end. .It's very light weight so it doesn't add any more stress to the socket than just hanging the cable. The main thing is that it's fast! I tested the speed and attached the results. The test was run from my PC with a 1Gbps port through my 1Gbps LAN to the NAS, also with a 1Gbps port. The adapter showed a speed of 115 Mbps, which is 920 Mbps. (bytes vs. bits) and very close to the 1G LAN I use. There are Ethernet overheads that don't factor into the speed test, so this is a very good result.
