Durable, offers a good workout

In mid-March 2020, like many others, I had to lock myself out of the gym because of the corona virus. In Wisconsin, the riding season doesn't start (for me) until mid-May when we have good weather. High-impact activities like running were ruled out many years ago by a back injury. Over the years I've considered buying one of the many exercise bikes but never got around to trying it. I'm 50 years old, in decent shape, on an elliptical at the gym, adjusting the resistance to save my heart. My target zone speed is 160 bpm (+/-5) for about 30-40 minutes, 3-4 times a week. I was concerned that the cycling wouldn't have enough resistance to keep my heart rate high enough, this is based on recreational trail riding this past summer. Because of this, cycling is more endurance for me. Pros: Easy to set up, a minute (or less) to mount the bike on the stand and install the caster. Taking bike off the stand in less than a minute - my Giant Cypress (2006) came out of the box, didn't have to switch to the included rear axle - easy, no instruction needed - stable, pretty good even when pedaling Speed and high resistance, adjustable resistance Not so much good: the only real hit I can put on this stand is the length of the adjustment cord. With the adjuster mounted on the handlebar, the cable dangled too close to the rear wheel, chain, and pedals/sprockets. I didn't want the cable to get caught in moving parts and damaged, so I used zip ties to secure the cable along the bike frame. The problem for me is that it's a lot less convenient to take the bike off the stand, park the bike and get out of the way when not in use. If the cable were a few feet longer, you could lay it flat on the ground and place a rug or objects like heavy books over the cable to keep it down and away from the bike's moving parts. Training: Some other reviews say there isn't enough resistance with this pose. I disagree, but your goals can play a role in what you need. I train with a heart monitor and once I've warmed up I can keep the bike speed and gear constant and just change the resistance up and down on the magnetic brake, my heart rate changes accordingly in about 30-60 seconds even if there is a slight change in pedaling resistance. At the highest resistance level, I can get my resting heart rate (about 60) up to 160 in under two minutes, which is what I usually do when using an elliptical at the gym, then I can lower the resistance to keep my heart rate up. This stand allows me to reach that target heart rate with a slight learning curve. Operation is smooth and quiet. I usually wear my headphones while exercising, but when I take them out while using this stand, I hear a faint "road noise" as if you're driving on pavement or concrete. It may depend on the tire tread, I have a "hybrid" bike, between mountain tread and road tread. I give it four stars and I'm glad I bought the stand. He will be of use during the coronavirus lockdown but I will happily return to the gym.
