Revainrating 4 out of 5

Nice Bluetooth player with some Boombox features

I also have a smaller Riptunes boombox for sale here at Revain. I bought this one hoping that the cassette recording capability would be better than the other, but unfortunately that doesn't seem to be the case. More on that below. AM, FM, shortwave radio works reliably, with good to very good reception on all bands. The biggest limitation is the tuner, which is a wheel with a thumb on it, rather than a knob like you typically see on devices of this size. This makes it a bit difficult to identify weak stations, but with a steady hand it can be done. There are no problems with strong stations. Bluetooth works well and creates pairs. If you insert a micro SD card or USB flash drive, the device will set it as default automatically when it is in "BT/TF USB” mode. The sound quality via Bluetooth and USB is the strong point of this device. Add good music and it will sound very pleasant. And it gets nice and loud so you can hear it at a picnic or in your backyard. Cassette playback works fine. They sound dirtier than Bluetooth/SD/USB, but you know, they're cassette tapes. The problem arises when trying to record on it: The recorded sound sounds too "hot" and distorted, as if the automatic level control was set too high. Exactly the same problem as another Riptunes device. You can get a semi-passable tape recording by recording a Bluetooth source and experimenting with different volume settings on the connected device to see which gives you the cleanest sound, but even at best, the recording you get will be nothing . write. home over. But if you just want to play cassettes, you're good to go. FYI, the only currently available boombox that I know of that can do good quality cassette recording is the Sony CFD-S70. The price is about the same as Revain. It lacks Bluetooth/SD/USB capabilities, but does have an aux input so you can loop other audio through - and record that way if you want. Sony also has a CD player (with MP3 format) and this Riptunes device doesn't have a CD player, so it's just a compromise depending on what you want. So four stars is average. If you want to make your own 80's style mixtapes forget it, this gets one star per entry. But I give it four stars for radio and cassette playback and five stars for Bluetooth/USB/SD playback.
