I'll admit the only reason I ended up buying the serger was because it was on sale at a great price. I am a male and although my wife can sew and operate a sewing machine, I am the main clown in the family. I've altered custom curtains, Halloween costumes, countless clothing items, etc., but I've always been a bit intimidated by Overlock and just avoided exploring them at all. This is mainly due to the usual high price of an overlock, when I actually only get along well with my sewing machine. But deep down I've always been tempted to own it. The first thing you need to know about an overlock machine is, that it is actually not that different from a sewing machine. If you remember how confused you were When you first load the bobbin and thread the sewing machine, it's not much different than when you first thread the overlock machine. The instructions are pretty clear, the thread paths are color coded, and if you can thread the sewing machine it's basically like doing it 4 times. Another big misconception is that for most overlocks you will only use 2 threads, sometimes 3 and rarely 4. So two threads should greatly reduce your overlock concerns. This machine worked great for me, right. out of the box on several different test towels. Something I didn't know about but was pleasantly surprised that most (all?) sergers have a built in trimmer that trims the edge/seam as you overcast. This is an incredible time saver, especially if you're stapling a simple pad so you can do it all in one go. Sweet. The build quality and the design of the machine are almost perfect. You can tell this is a model that has been refined over time and has been in production for some time. The only part I don't really bother or worry about over time is the telescoping tree/filament guide. The telescope part is like an old fashioned retractable antenna that will loosen over time and not stay upright. I've seen this as a relatively cheap replacement part ($6 on a "popular auction site"), and since this machine has been in production for so long, getting spare parts for it is pretty easy. When I look back, do I regret it? to buy? Not really. Do I need a sergeant? no But I think I'll love finishing the seams properly to prevent fraying and I think once I get more used to it (I've been using my sewing machine for over 25 years!) I'm sure I will become second nature and there will be some jobs I'll get on the sewing machine and some jobs I'll get on the sergers. I could try to speed up the learning process by taking some classes at the local Joanns or something, but to be honest I could just keep learning on my own as it really isn't that hard. that i will love neaten the seams properly to prevent fraying and I think once I get more used to it (I've been using my sewing machine for over 25 years!)
