Review on πŸ–₯️ Mushkin Alpha 8TB PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe 1.3 M.2 Internal SSD - 3D QLC – MKNSSDAL8TB-D8 by Anne Wilson

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Affordable price, great performance. Tendency to overheat after writing a large amount of data.

Pros: + Reasonable price (cheapest of all 8TB SSD options) + Outstanding performance. Combined with an Avolusion SSDTB900-PRO Thunderbolt 3 SSD External Enclosure and connected to a 16" Macbook Pro (Mid 2019) it achieves read speeds of 2450 MB/s and write speeds of 2000 MB/s. I also have an 8 TB Sabrent Rocket Q SSD and have tested their speeds with the same case and laptop - speeds are about the same as the Mushkin Alpha 8TB, I think this is most likely due to them both sharing the same and same controller. Phison E12S. Data ( 300GB - 1TB). I tested this SSD with two different cases, Avolusion SSDTB900-PRO (no active cooling) and Fledging Shell Thunder (active cooling). This SSD will overheat in both cases when writing large amounts of data. If it overheats, it performs a thermal shutdown and the external ssd enclosure is disconnected from the system I have to wait a minute or two for that ssd to cool down and then the go reconnect the case. This SSD works best with the Avolusion SSDTB900-PRO. There appears to be a firmware bug in Fledging Shell Thunder - when an SSD overheats, the Shell Thunder enclosure disconnects from the system and is unable to reconnect. I also tested the Sabrent Rocket Q 8TB SSD with both enclosures, and interestingly, it shows the same overheating issue when writing large amounts of data. I'm not sure how the Mushkin Alpha SSD performs in a desktop environment, but it does hit its limit when installing an external SSD enclosure. I agree with another user, this SSD uses very cheap packaging. At least it should have been in a box for better protection during transport.

Pros
  • 8TB M.2 (2280) PCIe 3 x4 NVM Express 1.3 SSD
Cons
  • Long delivery time
