Protection and comfort. Used on MTB rides after hip replacement as a little extra protection in the event of a fall. The padding has a slightly firm outer surface and subtle padding on the side of the thigh. I pulled on looser spandex riding shorts over that and barely realized I was wearing them. Recommend
