I installed my Aprilaire 800 in mid-November 2020 and it hasn't worked since February 2021. neither too hard nor too soft water. My service light was on so I pulled out the cartridge and it was full of what appeared to be a malt-o-flour slurry. Probably calcium carbonate and other minerals. I filled the cartridge with water, shook it and emptied it several times and it was 90% clean. I then sealed the bottom and soaked in CLR (Calcium Scale Remover) and it was 99% clear. This is a simple device with two arrays of electrodes inside, and as long as the electrodes are relatively clean and making good contact with the water it will keep working. About a week has passed since my service. I keep a backup in case I really need to replace it. If you don't refurbish your cartridges, vaping gets pretty expensive. Overall I'm happy with this solution, the best I've found.
