Review on ACDelco 509 608 Professional Steering Absorber by Todd Calloway

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Not quite the right part for 94-96 Buick Roadmasters.

Correct GM Part Number: 4993536 for 1994-1996 Buick Roadmaster Wagon with variable power steering (which had a steering damper factory installed). As far as I know, this part is no longer available. GM currently has a new part number replacing the old one. The new one is GM # 88946549 and this is this Delco 509-608 AC part. Unfortunately, this GM part swap isn't close enough to be a direct replacement. It turns out that this new piece is about 2 inches longer than the old one. I tested the new part by turning the steering wheel all the way to the right. This will make the shock about 1 inch longer. Although it technically fits in the same place, it compresses fully before the wheel stops stopping. This is not ideal and can inadvertently stress steering components. during a full right turn. This AC Delco part as well as the Moog SSD77 are recommended parts found on the Impala SS and Wagon forums. I ended up buying a Moog SSD77 and sending the part back to AC Delco. Moog SSD77 works with no concerns about improper fitment. It's about 1 1/2 inches shorter than this Delco AC 509-608. This gives the Moog block about 1/2" free play instead of 1" tethering. The diameters are identical. The hardware differs slightly between the two and is not cross-compatible. The hardware performs the same task, but in different ways. It appears that AC Delco and Moog are both made in the same factory. They are both made in Mexico. The robotic welds on the ends are identical to the end caps and paint job. Both are probably by Gabriel or Monroe. Finally, if you have a Buick Roadmaster or Chevy Caprice that has the same steering parts as the 1995 model and has a factory installed steering damper, you will want to skip that part and buy the Moog SSD77. .Please note that this rating is based on stock manufactured and available around 09/01/2014. Sometimes things change over time and none of the parts are listed as being compatible with these vehicles.
