Review on πŸ’ˆ Parker 66R: Ultimate Super Heavyweight Double Edge Safety Razor | Includes 5 Premium Blades by Rachel Marie

Revainrating 5 out of 5

The happy days are back!

In 1964, when I was 17, I enlisted in the Marine Corps. At boot camp I got a Gillette safety razor and a can of Barbarsol. It served me well for many years, but then in the early 70's Gillette came out with the Track Two razor and DE razors soon faded from view! Other brands emerged and each competed for the market. Instead of prices going down with the competition, they went up. just like printers and cartridges. Before the internet, finding a safety razor was almost impossible, let alone a blade! I, like many other "cleanest", suffered for many years with those lousy razors, and then along came Revain! Now I'm 69 and a bit slower to get things figured out, but I finally got the idea to look for good old fashioned safety razors. And so! there were many; although not a single Gillette. I went through dozens of descriptions and reviews before settling on the "Parker 66R". It's hefty, has a handle long enough to be comfortable, has a very comfortable butterfly opening, and comes with 5 blades. Also, as before, I ordered a bar of shaving soap, a badger comb, and a bowl. I couldn't wait to try this. After a shower, I filled the sink with hot water, grabbed a brush, and started whipping up a good lather. I cleaned it and oh my god! What a wonderful feeling! The razor glided gently across my aged, weatherbeaten face and I couldn't believe how much I missed it. It was like finding an old friend again. I literally enjoyed the moment because shaving became a real pleasure again. I was so impressed that I decided to carve a razor stand out of an old piece of raw cherry wood (see photo). The blades are ok but I'll probably order another brand when they wear out, which can happen after a while as I've "sharpened" my blades to last a lot longer than intended. How can you ask if a double-edged blade needs sharpening? Light. Take a drinking glass (keyword GLASS, not plastic), fill it halfway with warm or hot water, take the blade and gently slide it down the inside rim of the glass with your index finger until it submerges, then rub the side of it. to the side about a dozen times, take it out, turn it over and do the same with the other side. You are ready for another 10-12 shaves! Parker seems to know what we older guys like about a straight razor as they make different styles. You can't go wrong with them, I'm really very satisfied again!
