Review on 4th Generation Sky Blue 10.9-inch Apple iPad Air with 64GB and Wi-Fi by Andre Belitz

Small improvements, big experience

At first glance, this new iPad Air is not revolutionary. It's a little faster, a little thinner, a little lighter, and a little brighter than any tablet I've used before. But overall - and paired with the second-gen Apple Pencil - it feels like a whole new experience. I haven't been this excited about a new device in a long time. Over the years I've had three or four iPads, a few Android tablets, and a few convertible touchscreen laptops running different operating systems. Always a fan of Samsung because of the S Pen, I've owned several Galaxy Tabs and Chromebook Pros: I love taking handwritten notes during meetings and I love writing my first drafts by hand. But this device, with a pencil, is head and shoulders above any other tablet I've used. Writing and drawing on it feels absolutely intuitive and fluid. The responsiveness of the pencil interface is amazing - it perfectly reproduces my handwriting (chicken scratch)! And more importantly, the handwriting recognition built into the operating system is frankly amazing. Whether you're using Scribble's feature to handwrite notes on a form, or the Notes app's feature to search for handwritten notes, it all works MUCH better than I expected. I repeat: I have terrible handwriting. And yet this iPad is capable of deciphering my kanji at a speed that makes this feature really useful - I expected it to be nothing more than a gimmick. because in the past handwriting recognition apps were completely useless to me. A few times I actually giggled out loud when the iPad recognized something I wrote that I could barely read myself. Aside from how perfectly the iPad, iPadOS14 and Pencil have integrated into my workflow, the design of the device itself is very beautiful and the build quality is excellent. The tablet feels strangely light, but is still very robust. And it's subtle - even Apple's marketing imagery doesn't really reflect that. And obviously the new processor is good, although I won't pretend I've done enough, to even come close to pushing its limits. But the whole experience was very smooth, even when I was messing around with the video editing and trying to find the most graphically intensive games I could find on the App Store. Freezing or stuttering were not observed. Everything says it's not perfect. I wish Apple would finally add OLED displays to more devices besides the iPhone. The screen on this one is really great, don't get me wrong. And black people aren't terrible or anything. But considering how good everything else is on this device, having a backlit screen, as advanced and beautiful as it is, seems odd. And I'm kind of ambivalent about the TouchID power button. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad the home button is gone, but I'd rather have FaceID. TouchID on this iPad works great and is very fast, but I'm used to just tapping my iPhone's screen and automatically unlocking it. device, it fit right into my workflow. I think the highest praise I can give is that it's amazing how quickly it's gone effectively: after a few days of use I didn't notice it anymore because everything about writing and taking notes with the iPad and pencil became second nature, it seemed to me it had always been there. I cannot be happier with this purchase. device, it fit right into my workflow.
