The extra rough side of this stone cuts very quickly and is great for beveling the blade, removing shavings or any other job that requires quick metal removal from the blade. The rough side does a good job of removing the roughness left by the very rough side and is also a good place to start sharpening a neglected edge. It's not the last stone by any reasonable standards, but it can be a good place to start. Twelve inches long and three inches wide provides enough surface area to handle longer knives. The stand is sturdy, holds the stone securely with a large magnet, and has enough room for your knuckles. The continuous diamond surface avoids the problem of knife edge pinching. I use this stone in combination with a fine/extra fine stone with the same base, dimensions and finish on an 8" extra extra fine stone. You can use this stand for a very thin stone that is sold without a stand.
