I bought a Cavalier 04 with the filter already installed. It is very difficult to check or replace the air filter. I can't even see if it's there. When I tried to pull the system once, I even removed the car battery and separated the metal tube from the plastic tube, but I still can't. I don't really know if this will help the car's performance, but I doubt it. If you need such a system, I recommend buying one that is easy to install and remove.
