I was trying to find control valves for an underground sprinkler system. Can track cable routes, but CANNOT distinguish valve position from cable routing. Easily confused with "common" line instead of the "main signal line" you are tracing. Picks up other wires in the area, in some cases better than the wire the 'transmitter' is connected to (e.g. I followed a strong signal straight to a wire box even though I started with sprinkler wire). Had to rent a $500 unit from a sprinkler company to get the job done. Bottom line: if you're looking for underground control valves or wire breaks, forget it. If you want to trace the approximate route of the cables underground, it might be worth it instead of digging up the entire yard.
