This pre-filter has only been in my tank for a few minutes, so my rating is not based on its effectiveness. My rating is based on a very common issue this product has which is broken knees when assembling the product. I read the reviews before purchasing the filter and I knew this was a problem but was hoping to avoid it. It turns out that this is almost impossible. If you just put two elbows together the risk of one of them breaking is very high and in my case unavoidable. I thought reading the reviews that some people might have been too pushy putting the pieces together, now I know that's not the case. The elbow pads break as soon as they are put together. I wanted to use both elbows to keep the filter vertical as you can see in the photo of the product. Now I'm forced to use only one of the elbows, which means it now has to sit horizontally. I hope the filter is working well, but it's pretty obvious that the plastic parts of the connector are broken. Too many people have experienced this problem for it to be a coincidence.
