These pants are a bit heavy for summer (because they're all cotton), but my 8-year-old daughter reports that they're comfortable, especially with the adjustable waistband. She likes that they are tight. To wear them with regular sneakers, she has to unzip the bottom, but that's not a problem. Interestingly they are almost too short for her (but not quite) so I would recommend ordering a size up for your son if he is tall at all and ordering the right size if buying for a girl.
