Review on MERKUR Slant MK 37C Double Safety by Kristine Carrillo

Revainrating 5 out of 5

I thought my DE shave couldn't improve

I've been shaving regularly with the Merkur HD 34C for a little over three years now. You will see that my rating of this razor is 5 stars and the tagline "Best shave I have ever had". I'll correct that now, because I like this 37C slant bar even better. I have generally refrained from buying a bevel razor simply because I've heard, read and internalized the tradition that a bevel razor is simply more aggressive than a straight razor. Now that I've shaved this razor about 10 times, I'm not sure I agree. I agree that the angled razor has a different feel and touch. In fact, the first thing I noticed about the 37C was that it *sounded* different when I shaved. What used to be a click is now more muted. It's an interesting feeling. So yes, how to shave with a beveled rail requires some study and study. However, I can definitely say that the experience was worth it. The 37C isn't friendlier or softer, but it definitely feels more efficient and requires less manual handling. I suppose that's what some people mean when they say "aggressive," but to me an aggressive razor would be one that cuts you without provocation, and that's really any DE razor when it comes down to it. It just seems to me that the 37C performs better, but as you read everywhere your mileage may vary. I recommend you try this razor if you are into the angled razor. The feel is different, of course, but that's why I'm going to make this my daily machine instead of the 34C.

Pros
  • Decent performance
Cons
  • Poorly thought out
