I used mine a week or two before a 2 week trip just to make sure I liked it. This worked great for me! I liked that it can be filled when needed or just rolled up and put back in the backpack. I didn't notice any odor coming from it and since I just poured water in it I didn't worry about washing it. I simply used a cheap plastic skirt hanger to secure the bottom piece and let it dry overnight. Sometimes I put it in the freezer overnight so I have cold water the next day. Very diverse. I have a supply in my suitcase for the next trip. I figured if it lasted a vacation they were worth it but I'm still using them 3 weeks later.
