Review on DonJoy Performance Bionic Support Brace by Jeremy Marshall

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Comfortable enough but with poor design.

Bought two of these. One to replace a very outdated medical knee brace from over 20 years ago and another for my poor right knee which has taken up most of the distribution over the years. When I was a teenager I caused catastrophic damage to my left knee. Football injury that sadly stayed with me for the rest of my life, severely affecting my normal ability to walk. Of course, as I get older, age and other injuries to the same joints take their toll. I tore my ACL 4 times in my left knee and also my PCL twice. Due to the initial injury, I was unable to walk unaided for life. In this case I have to wear a flexible corset to prevent the lateral movement that occurs and will occur without a corset. I was hoping with this brace to find a suitable alternative to "medical" braces which are extremely expensive and not easy to obtain for someone my foot size. My original medical braces were similar to these. So, GOOD: They are comfortable for long time and use. When I'm not at home I usually wear a corset for 8 hours or more at a time. They breathe really well, but they absorb REALLY A LOT of sweat, so YOU may or may not be uncomfortable. BAD: Terrible packaging design. The absolute worst velcro valve ever. My wife actually has to help me if I want them to fit and close properly. The alternative is that the velcro will eat into the sides of my leg/knee if not aligned properly. If Don Joy wants to change their design and send me a pair to test, I'm happy they can wrap the brace properly. The medical grade Velcro attaches above the knee, which is much more comfortable and easier to align without eating the Velcro into the leg, knee or joint (at least that was the case over 20 years ago). CONCLUSION: If for some reason you can't get medical bandages around your braces, they're a good alternative. If you can handle some design flaws or have smaller feet, this might be a good option. If you have big feet like me, keep looking and see if you can find a brace with tabs that go all the way to the top of the leg/knee as I can guarantee you are likely to have the same issue with this brace I got on the bigger leg.
