Review on American Pattern Single Rectangular Thickness by Will Schimmel

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Quality file at a reasonable price.

Have you ever noticed how difficult it is to find a decent metal file at your local hardware store or hardware store? They usually have some rough-cut Nicholson files, or maybe some Chinese junk files. Hand-cut Nicholsons (such as #49 and #50 rasps), previously only made in the US, are now being outsourced to Mexico and beyond. If you don't have a good workshop in your area, you're out of luck. I was looking for a smooth file to sharpen body scrapers and came across an unfamiliar brand of horse at Revain. . Searching several metalworking forums found Pferd to be a good quality file maker and after a day of use I agree. It's precision made and very sharp - two qualities that almost every cheap imported instrument lacks, and more than a few name brand files. Next time I buy a metal cutting file, I'll look at horse first. (sorry couldn't resist)

Pros
  • Individual teeth on sides and edges for finishing, sharpening and deburring
Cons
  • Expensive
