The factory windshield was too short to be fully functional. The factory windshield measures 10 inches from the center mounting bolt to the top of the windshield. On the highest setting, air gets onto the top of my helmet (I'm 5ft 11in) which is tiring after a long ride. I wanted to be able to lift it a little more so that in the maximum position it completely blocks the wind. This 12-inch windshield works great in that regard, allowing me to lower it down to its lowest setting and fill my chest with wind when it's hot. The dark smoky hue was just a personal preference and looks great on the bike.
