My friend and I assembled it in about 30 minutes. I'm not sure if I could do it myself as you have to hold the pieces in place by twisting them together. He had a drill that helped a lot. It's not exactly wood, but it's thicker than chipboard. It is quite durable and looks very nice. There are small magnets that keep the doors closed. I wouldn't sit on it but it will make a good bed for my cats. For the first two days he smelled of burning, which disappeared. My cats have already used this tray. On the advice of another reviewer, I got the Iris High Side Box. Sizing online is misleading and made me think the box wouldn't fit, but it does. I was also worried my big cat wouldn't be able to get through the tall side door. She weighs 10 pounds, is medium sized and fits great. I'm not sure the big cat will succeed. I didn't notice much stray junk outside of the box, which is surprising. He's really isolated. I also installed a motion sensor because it is very dark there. Maybe it's too bright for my cats and I could remove it, but it works fine. In general, the purchase is satisfied.
