Good leather, perfect for my project

Contrary to what other reviews say, this is actually made from animal skins. However, this is not what you typically get when you order a several times more expensive cowhide leather. I wanted to make leather seat covers for my car and it was perfect. Some things to know before ordering: 1 - Size. After some experience with smaller quantities, I ordered 40 square meters. Why? Because I measured what I needed and got about 27 to 30 square feet (whereas I could only actually use about 25). That would be enough if I was designing my seat covers to sew more than 6 smaller pieces together for a seat, but I had 2 or 3 planned so I was missing some leftovers to make a purse with. I don't know how leather is measured, but expect to get about half a square meter of usable material, unless you plan on stitching every tiny piece together, in which case you can count on around 75%. 2 - weight / thickness. This skin has been refined so that its weight is needed to craft clothing. The suede layer has been removed. It's too thin for pads or structured pockets. It's more flexible, easier to cut and sew, and weighs about the same as denim. It's still leather, however, and is denser and tougher, so still use leather sewing machine needles and keep them sharp. In order for the leather to hang properly, I had to purchase a material with a soft texture, which also makes it easier to insert the memory foam padding into the seat covers.3 - Quality: The leather I received can be described as having some wear. Some areas were nice and smooth while others were wavy or cracked. If you look at a supplier on Revain you will see that they sell leather jackets and other clothing. I suspect the leather they sell is oversized and/or poor quality. It's already dyed and ready to be sewn into clothing, so don't plan on dyeing, branding, or treating it in any way yourself. Also, the three pieces I received showed that they came from two different batches of dye, so I had to use pieces from different batches to prevent them from being side by side. After the car seat, the covers were sewn (leather and stretch denim), I conditioned the leather and it's just beautiful. This leather was much easier to work with than the heavier real leather and was already dyed the way I wanted it. I suggest taking the supplier's advice (after 2 returns) and ordering a box of leftovers to get an idea of the colors and weight. The investment is worth it. Also, measure what you need and order double the square footage if you want to use larger pieces or expect a perfect finish.

Pros
  • Great price
Cons
