Although somewhat bulkier than inflatable pads, the nesting nature of the eggcrate foam pattern of this pad reduces it's bulk somewhat, and it is lighter than many inflatables (and you don't have to worry about punctures). It is relatively thin, but the patterning and somewhat stiffer nature of the material does a good job of keeping you off the ground. Also helpful is the immediate use of this pad when needed to serve as a sitting or laying pad on hiking breaks, just unclip it from the pack and sit. My son used this on his recent 12 day trek at Philmont in New Mexico and said it worked great for him, and it is still in great shape.
