I have made many dowels with this blade stack and also with the 8" version. I would only use a little over a 3/4" stack along with a zero gap stop to make simple dowels. I have recently started making dados which require me to build up the exact thickness of the stack and have started using shims accident in my shop which I RECOMMEND I did something wrong.Basically the 3/4- "Inch stack doesn't have enough room for the washer on the shaft, so only the nut on the shaft is used. After a series of cuts, I turned off the table saw and the blades continued to spin freely until I heard the blades stop ( more than two minutes! These things have a lot of inertia!) Although the blade was fully functional during the cut, after turning it off, the nut on the axle completely detached from the axle and caught several chews ne of the blade on the way. After looking for the nut (and also finding two of the blade's hard alloy teeth) I decided that was enough for the weekend. After talking to some of my colleagues, we came to the conclusion that this shouldn't have happened if I had really used the tools correctly. They are very well tested and inexpensive. I ran a number of experiments to create a thicker stack of slits, taking great care to properly tighten the nut on the shaft, turning the saw on and off, and making short trial cuts from a particularly safe position. and then put the saw down just to get a feel for it. When I lined up notches with washers, I really experimented with how to arrange them correctly, how to get them on the shaft without jamming the threads. , and tighten the nut. These washers mostly seem to have clearance free holes that are very snug on the mandrel so they require some machining to fit into place. Regardless, even if a mandrel washer is used to protect the nut from the reverse torque associated with the retarding pack, the blades can become loose enough to rotate freely about the axle IF A SEAL IS USED. After repeated testing, I've found that cuts can be made safely if I don't use a shim (with or without a mandrel washer). When using a spacer I can NOT always ensure it is installed correctly and make safe cuts. These things have turned using the dado blade from a routine shop chore into a nerve-wracking game of death roulette. Make precise cuts across the width without worry. I DO NOT RECOMMEND USING THE GASKETS PROVIDED IN THIS KIT. A NOTICE. Maybe it's a compound fault, my nut is somehow defective, or my mandrel is a few microns over or under 5/8" and combined with sub-optimal gasket service conditions, the problem gets worse. I have a spare washer and nut from the manufacturer ordered and will test again.
