I am an avid hiker who does a lot of off-roading and have had all types of gaiters from the simplest to the knee heavy and these are by far the best I have. I ever owned it as intended. In this case I wanted something light, quick and easy to put on (I hate the ones you have to put on before shoes/boots) and yet very effective in protecting against unwanted foxtails, sand etc. When my significant other saw how well they fit me , she got so jealous that I had to buy her a pair too. Normally she had to stop many times to shake the rubbish out of her hiking boots, after three hikes without a single unwanted object to get into the shoes she was thrilled. So basically it should be 10 stars instead of 5... (And I RARELY give 5 stars) Of course they're not for protection from dense vegetation or protection from shin/knee high snakes, but definitely, that's not what they're for designed. I have other gaiters for these times but these are perfect for probably 95% of my hikes.
