Dry, brittle and not very green

I bought this alfalfa hay for my two 3 month old guinea pigs. Our vet recommended only feeding them alfalfa hay as their previous home never gave them fresh vegetables and I had a hard time getting them to eat. At first I gave them old lucerne, but it was too expensive for me, although my piglets liked it. I saw great reviews of this alfalfa hay saying it was fresh and how green it was so I decided to give it a try. When it arrived, the first thing I noticed upon opening the box was the smell (or lack thereof). ). It smelled of absolutely nothing. This was the first sign that the hay was not fresh. When you open a fresh hay sack, you usually smell it. This "hay" didn't smell at all, which was alarming. The next thing I noticed was his looks. The hay felt tough and thin and not green at all. This hay looked neither fresh nor nutritious. Also, it consisted of two very large blocks that required you to manually break and/or cut the hay into pieces, which brings me to my next question. When I picked up the hay to tear it apart, it was very dry, hard, and prickly. My fingers literally hurt lifting the hay out of the box. All the hardwood just lay in dry, crusty, brittle heaps at the bottom of the box. Knowing my piglets wouldn't like it, I decided to let them try it anyway. I have a hay box at the end of their cage where they like to romp, sleep and eat haystacks. When I put this hay in their box they went in, sniffed, tried to find good hay and eventually left. They wouldn't get into the hay barrel while the hay was still there because it was uncomfortable and I'm sure it wasn't appetizing. hay on the internet. I ended up having to drive 30 minutes to a nearby town to find a farm supply store and buy their brand of alfalfa hay. I have never bought their hay but noticed the difference immediately. I traded that hay for hay I bought at the farm store and my piglets spent the field day chewing and rooting for hay that they could actually eat and didn't feel like barbed wire to their sensitive little paws. .I had really high hopes for this hay based on the good reviews, but it definitely didn't live up to my expectations. I photographed Viking Farmer hay (below) and hay purchased from a farm supply store to document the difference. Maybe I just caught a box of bad hay. I don't know but I don't want to risk that hay especially if I fall because it was extremely frustrating and my gilts always need hay.
