Review on Canon ST E2 Speedlite Transmitter Speedlites by Kelly Noonan

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Good access to external flash control

I was reading Strobist ([.]) and was looking for inspiration to take the flash off the camera. I have used one of Gary Fong's light spheres with excellent results for the occasional portrait at a meeting or event. But for more formal portraits I'd like to be able to use side lighting but still keep it simple and mobile. Goal 1 was to take the flash off the camera and put it on the stand. I considered going the more expensive radio route but decided it would be fine for the first round. So far it's working well in home experiments - there are limitations in range and visibility, but that doesn't mean there should be a direct line of sight between the STE2 and the flash. As mentioned in another review, the CR25 flash battery is a little fancy, but I found it at BestBuy - just be aware you can't get it at hardware stores. The nice thing is that you can adjust the flash compensation through this device and through your camera if it's possible. So if you're shooting in manual or assist mode you can easily increase or decrease the flash by two stops by changing the setting on your camera (check if your camera is capable of this - I know the 40D and 5DMkII can ). So I would say that for a modest price you can ditch the flash from the camera and have fun with better light settings. Next I will have a second flash and then you can also adjust the ratio between the two flashes on the STE2 without touching the flashes.
